A slugfest for nearly two years, Minnesota's U.S. Senate race headed into a new round Wednesday as the campaigns girded for an automatic statewide recount to determine whether Republican Sen. Norm Coleman's bare lead over Democratic challenger Al Franken would stand. Coleman declared himself the winner of Tuesday's election, but Franken said he would let the recount play out, hoping it would erase the incumbent's 475-vote lead out of nearly 2.9 million ballots.

Yesterday, California voters voted overwhelmingly in favor of Proposition 2, a historic move that brings animals legal rights in the land of factory farming. Prop 2 guarantees farm animals improvements in their current large scale farm conditions, requiring farmers give them space to turn around, spread their wings, stand up and lie down.
While these are only slight moves to better the well being of farm animals, the Prop 2 victory is historic.
California's Proposition 8, which amends the state's Constitution to overturn a previous state Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage, was too close to call earlier Wednesday. Now, it appears to have passed -- among others, the Associated Press has called it for the proposition's backers. With 96 percent of precincts in, the "yes" votes were leading 52.2-47.8.
